Francisca “Cort” Cortez joined the Los Santos Fire Department in 1970 at 20 years old, becoming the department’s first female firefighter and quickly proving herself through relentless work ethic and sharp instincts on the fireground. Despite early skepticism, she earned the respect of her crew, becoming a trusted interior firefighter known for her calm demeanor and ability to read dangerous conditions. By 1977, she was an informal leader, mentoring younger firefighters and serving as a steady presence on calls. On March 11, 1978, during a multi-story commercial building fire, Francisca recognized signs of an imminent collapse while conducting a search and ordered a younger firefighter to retreat; when he hesitated, she physically pushed him to safety moments before the structure gave way. He survived—she did not. She is remembered not only as the first woman in the LSFD, but as a firefighter who earned her place through courage, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication
